can't install Ubuntu 7.04

Asked by David Thornton

I am trying to install 7.04 on Dell Latitude cp which has no operating system. It had a Windows XP system installed which was deleted because it was an unauthorized edition which someone had installed before I got it. First when I tried I got the "Buffer error on device" message. I entered "pcl-no acpe ide-reverse" which someone suggested, the "irpoli". This got rid of the Buffer error but still won't boot. Then I tried "nodma". Still no luck. I get the Ubuntu page with the orange button going back and forth which continues for a while, then get blank screen with a small dash in upper left hand corner of screen. The CD spins for a while then light blinks sporadically . I tried leaving it go for a couple of hours. but nothing. I am trying to install from CD which I purchased. Settings are to boot from CD. Any help wwill be appreciated.

Is the CD damaged? On the menu you get, instead of telling it to boot into live mode, tell it to check the disk for errors.
Or you can download the latest copy and burn it yourself. Is there any reason for not using 7.10?

I ran the "Check Disc For Erors" It filled up the bar below the Icon (Ubunto) but there were no messages. It just stopped there. Does this mean there are no errors? And what should I do next.

The correct boot options parameters, and howto, are listed here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

To get better help please tell us the model of your Dell Latitude...
Try to look for it under the back sticker of your laptop...

I downloaded xubuntu and burned a CD but when I put it in the computer I want to install it on, I get message "Missing Operating System". I thought this was an operating system, so why do I need another operating system to install this one? I'm about to give up. Thanks for your help. Is there any answer to this problem?

You must configure your bios "boot" option and put as first device the cd-rom.

Usually to get BIOS access you must press "canc" or F2 or F10 at very first screen that appears in front of you when you switch on your pc.

Then you can install it here a video on xubuntu install procedure:

I have the first device as cd-rom. The problem is now that I have burned the xubuntu disc and insert it and turn on computer, I get the "operating system missing" message. and I can not proceed any further. The xubuntu screen does not come up so there is no way that I can install the system. Sorry for all the problems but I'm stuck.

I burned a new CD and inserted it in machine, I got to the ubuntu screen with the icons on left side (Trash - Home - File Systems - Examples - Install. Then I attempted to Install and got as far as the white screen with "Install" on top. Computer froze up at this point. Are there any adjustments that I need to make. I changed from VGA to 800 x 640.
