Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

First you need to blacklist the rt2800usb driver using this Terminal command:
echo blacklist rt2800usb | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.
This blacklisting of the rt2800usb driver is recommended in the following bugreport:
https:/
Then reboot and retest wireless. If it is not working yet, then try installing the newest rt3070 drivers using this link:
https:/
Then reboot and retest wireless. If that does not help, then try installing the newest version of the package "linux-firmware" as suggested here by Martin Pitt:
https:/
"Martin Pitt wrote on 2010-06-09: #10
Accepted linux-firmware into lucid-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https:/
If all those steps still do not help, then change wireless encryption from WPA (or WPA2) to WEP encryption, as suggested here
https:/
Then retest wireless.
If all those steps still do not help, then install Ubuntu 11.10 onto the harddisk.

Many thanks again. I have had partial success. I did everything down to installing the latest 3070 drivers. I looked at the next stage but didn't know what to do when presented with multiple options. Not to worry though as I now reckon the computer recognised the dongle and clicking on the wireless icon at top right indicates that it is connected. However, I still cannot connect to the internet. The modem is called Thomson 3A081C and the instructions that came with it say to type its IP address into the address line in order to establish a connection. It doen't like that either. I'm guessing that since the computer indicates that it is connected to the wireless modem that it has accepted the passcode. Not sure of what to do next. If all else fails I'll buy a cable although I'd prefer wirelless!
Best regards
Chris
