DVD Playback appears (and sounds) scrambled

Asked by Michael Buchoff

Whenever I play a DVD with mplayer, or any other Linux DVD player, the content appears scrambled.

However, if I run DVDDecrypter in Wine, go to Tools->Settings->I/O and change the Interface to ASPI - WNASPI32.DLL, it rips fine.

The Device manager reports my DVD player as:
> Computer
-> 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) SATA IDE Controller
--> CDRW/DVD GCC4244
---> Ubuntu 7.10 i386

I'd like to watch DVDs natively in Linux, without having to rip/convert them. Is this possible?

see

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

hope that helps

Thanks for the quick response, but unfortunately the problem persists (I tried with a fresh install just to be safe). Is there anything else I can try?

It may be a DMA problem. Use hdparm to activate DMA on your DVD player. If hdparm is not installed, install it. and enter in a terminal

sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/scd0

assuming /dev/scd0 is your DVD drive. You can be sure of that entering

ls -l /dev/dvd

Thanks for the help. I don't think it worked, but hopefully this will give
more advice on the problem.

mbuchoff@d-l33t:~/kibaMakeScript/kiba-dock/src$ ls -l /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-12-20 17:34 /dev/dvd -> scd0
mbuchoff@d-l33t:~/kibaMakeScript/kiba-dock/src$ sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/scd0

/dev/scd0:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
mbuchoff@d-l33t:~/kibaMakeScript/kiba-dock/src$

It appears that my DVD-ROM is scd0, since there is no other scd (i.e. no
scd1, scd2, etc.)

Hi Michael !

After thinking about it, you cannot use hdparm with your drive. install sdparm and try to tweak your disk speed settings. I have not dig through sdparm, But my guess is your problem comes from a too low data rate.

I had installed the dvd playback functionality in Jaunty per the instructions at ubuntuguide.org and still couldn't play a particular DVD movie.

When I used VLC or Mediaplayer to play the movie, the picture was scrambled and the application would then crash.

What fixed it for me was to cd into ~/.dvdcss and then remove the directory with the DVD movie name(contains a bunch of cryptically named files in it). After that, the DVD movie played fine.

Cheers!
