installing ubuntu

Asked by Ella Lee

I am trying to load ubuntu on new dell boxes that are 64 bit AMD and have no operating system. I have tried to install the software. I get to a point where the computer asks for a password and it won't accept it. I am ready to f-disk the whole thing and try again. What should I do?

We need more information.

Are you using the liveCD or Alternate cd?
What does the password prompt say?
If it gives an error message when it doesn't accept the password, what is the error message?

The live cd that I had was for regular computers, not 64 bit. I had to download the ISO image. The password prompt tells me that my password was wrong and to try again and it loops.

I am doing this for a church outreach program, so I need to figure this out soon.

Is there any information regarding why it is asking for a password?
When in the install process dose this happen?

After the computer restarts, all the software is loaded up, (this takes quite a while), that is when this happens. I thought it was asking for the password because it was done loading and after the password, I might see a desktop. Butk, those are my assumptions.

If you are booting from the CD and it asks for a password it is pretty weird.
If you installed ubuntu and booting from harddisk you should use the username and password you set in the installer.

Is this an orange color screen with the password prompt on center?

This isn't helping me. I think I am going to F-disk it and start over.

I agree with Jim -- Reading what you have written I believe you have successfully installed ubuntu to the machine. I think the password you are looking at is the main logon password (similar to the ctrl+alt+del password of windows logon), which you would have specified during the install. If it is an orangey-brown screen (very very light brown if you will), then Jim is correct.

If you do start over (no need to fdisk, just choose 'wipe entire disk' when installing), during the install _be sure_ and note down the username and password you enter as your account name in the screen that looks like the following:

Thanks Jim and Allen.
I am positive of my login information. However, in the event that I did make a mistake here, how can I find out what my login and password is set to?

You can't. It wouldn't be safe then.

Can you help with this problem?
