Need help again

Asked by Margaret Mackintosh

Hi,

My male cat walked across the keyboard while I was on my user account. Later we discovered that my home page was like my husbands was the other day. No icons on the top right corner and no panel on the left side. At the top left side there was 'File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools and Help that is usually hidden till you put the mouse up into that space.

So like I did with my husbands account, I canceled my user account after saving my files. Then created a new user account. But, when I looked for my files, nothing was there. So, my question is: When I got the box up asking if I wanted to save the files or not and I clicked 'SAVE FILES', where did they go and how do I get them back? Any info would be appreciated.

Margaret

Your cat likely simply pressed the F11 key to go to fullscreen mode.

All you need to do is press F11 to restore it back to normal.

Your files will still be stored under your old account, unless you saved them to an external disk.

Hi again,

I shut off the computer and after restarting I pressed F11, nothing happened. So I guess that did not work.

I remembered to press Ctrl + Alt then F11, but that just put me to a blank screen with a cursor, also pressing Ctrl + Alt then F12 did the same thing. Did not get my old user account. It is gone I believe. So what else can I try?

Im having a little trouble understanding exactly what you are doing, and what the problem is -- as far as I can tell, you can log into your system, and then you open your browser and see:

"File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools and Help" when you move your mouse to the top. But the launcher icons on the left are missing?

Perhaps the easiest thing, as I am a little confused as to where you are, is to use the new account, contrary to the instructions I gave above.

If so, then when you use file->save, it should save them into the home folder for your old account -- this may be the "margret-z56" from your earlier questions. If so, then the files will be located *above* your home folder for your new account in /home/

Inside /home/ you should see margret-z56, which you should be able to open. Inside that you should be able to see your old files. You will be able to read them, but as you are logged into a different account, you will not be allowed to save them, except to a new location.

If you are able to provide any more information about the procedure that you are following and what you can see and what things you can't do that you normally can, this would be most helpful in understanding your context.

Wrong. What happen was that somehow the icons that are at the top RIGHT corner - envelope, battery, wireless, sound, time, me and Ubuntu icons disappeared and also the LEFT panel disappeared. All that I could read but in the LEFT hand corner was 'File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools and Help'. All these are USUALLY hid till I put the mouse in the top left corner area. So I was unable to do anything. Could not click on any of the ones that was SUPPOSE to be in the top right corner of the screen as they were not there. Could not click on anything in the panel as the panel was not there either. Had to press and hold the Start/Off button to shut down the laptop.

To hopefully take care of this I first saved my files and then canceled my user account. Then I made a new user account but none of my saved files were there. In fact nothing was there, no history, files, nothing. Several months ago when I first upgraded to Ubuntu-11.10 from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS I copied my Home folder and my husbands Home folder onto a DVD. So I was able to put the DVD into the player on the laptop and download the things off of it. I did get all my pictures up till that time back. But, the more recent ones that I thought 'I had saved' are no longer there. Also my back-up on the DVD did not for some reason have my documents or anything else except the pictures. So unless I can find and reinstall my 'Saved Files' all my info since June has been lost.

So this is the reason I am trying to find out how to FIND and then INSTALL my hopefully SAVED FILES. I will try what you suggested at the end. To save the files when I clicked on CANCEL I got a box that had several selections - DELETE FILES, SAVE FILES and one other thing. I clicked SAVE FILES. Soon as I did this my old user account got canceled. Then I created myself a new user account and I thought all my files would of been there but wasn't. I am now backing up all my files 'daily' using 'Back-Up'.. I will give the latest help a try. Thanks.

Also when I move the mouse sometimes whatever I have written gets highlighted and the page scrolls up if I try and move to the top of the page or bottom if I try and move the mouse to the bottom. This is very annoying as I cannot click on anything. So usually shut down the computer manually using the Start/Off button.

Using back up isn't doing me any good either as the things it backs up I cannot open as they are 'not recognized'. So that isn't any good either. Guess I just lost everything.
