Desktop effects

Asked by STempler

After Ubuntu install, desktop effects were fine. After installing Beryl they are now gone. When I attempt to enable them I get the message "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I tried removing Beryl though the manager is still there, so maybe I didn't. I am new to Ubuntu as you may have guessed. I tried the steps mentions in the read on installing "fglrx" and no go. I'm pretty sure this is all my doing. Can anyone help me undo it?
There is no "screens and Graphics card" item in my Admin menu and the only thing listed in my restricted drivers is the Atheros (HAL).

Hi !

Seems to me like you messed everything up...

How have you installed beryl ?

don't try to install fglrx ! it won't work with your card : you have the luck to have one of the only ATI card well supported by the free radeon driver...

give me the link of the tutorials you followed.

Try starting beryl by entering the following in a terminal:

$ beryl-manager && beryl

(The $ is the system prompt. You do not enter that.)

This should start beryl and enable its default effects. Note that the beryl project is discontinued and it is replaced by Compiz Fusion in Ubuntu 7.10...

If you want to uninstall beryl, enter the following in a terminal window:

$ sudo apt-get --purge remove beryl && sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

This should do the job...

Let me know, if this doesn't work...

Good luck! :)

Did install Beryl. Also tried to un-install it. When I tried the uninstall in terminal
I recieved the message that Beryl was not installed therefore cold not be uninstlled but the Beryl manager is still in
in my Applications Menu.

I followed the "install from Ubuntu repositories" on this page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI.

Thanks for the response and the help.

Hey Guys. First off thanks for all the help.
What Olivier said about the driver got me thinking and I had some free time so I purged the "Fglrx" and installed the open source. Edited the xorg.conf and all is now well.
Thanks again.
