Desktop Icons and Wallpaper Lost/ Disabled with Maverick Meerkat Upgrade in Xubuntu

Asked by Nichalus-Michael Mourer

I am trying to follow the steps that I am given. I really don't understand linux as I am a novice. When I downloaded the latest edition of xubuntu which I believe is named Maverick Meerkat, I restarted my computer when prompted but then my desktop encountered an error. My previous icons had dissapeared and the initial wallpaper vanishes to a grey screen when windows are moved across it. I checked my settings and the wallpaper image still appears to be set the same as before but I have no way of knowing what caused this or how to fix it. I was hoping a new update would fix the problem but it hasn't. I am considering upgrading to the new linux version 'Oneiric Ocelot' as my update manager now shows that it's available in hopes that this may fix the problem. I have found it very diificult to locate the help I need in understanding how to use and optimize my linux software. I don't even understand why I have Xubuntu as opposed to regular Ubuntu or what advantages there are to variuos versions. I don't like how the file system in the new firefox changed from karmic koala to the version I have now. I used to able to save video files from my firefox cache but now I cannot even locate them. The firefox cache system appears to have splits into hundreds of microfolders and is berhaps encoded now. Perhaps you may have advice on this concern as well. I realy don't even know if I am addressing my concerns to the correct forum. I was trying to establish an Xchat IRC client to discuss the main problem through the correct channel at (irc.freenode.net). My update manger advised my of this route to acquire support. I submitted a bug report for this problem using my terminal window and typing: ubuntu-bux linux
This appears to have generated a bug report that was sent but I am not sure if you will get it. Thank you

Dear submitter,

Commonly Xubuntu is used on machines that have low performance hardware. If that is not applicable to you I would recommend to use Ubuntu (more information is available at www.ubuntu.com). I would not recommend that you attempt an upgrade from Xubuntu to Ubuntu. Perform a clean install instead.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

I would also suggest that you create a new thread in the Ubuntu forums (www.ubuntuforums.org) or create a new question on Ask Ubuntu (askubuntu.com) pages. These two websites are dedicated to helping individuals who are using Ubuntu or derivatives.

Regards,
Peter Dam (SwitchDK)

Dear Nichalus-Michael Mourer,

Your bug report has been converted to a question because it is difficult to tell from your description if the problems you are experiencing are actually caused by misconfiguration or potentially missing packages. Your bug report is also more about asking for help, which a bug report is not suitable for.

I will try to help you but for that I need to dissect your initial question, which brings me to ask the following list of questions:

- Which steps have you been provided? Can you please share them with us
- The most recent release of Xubuntu is 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) but at the time where you submitted your question it was 11.04 (Natty Narwhal). Is there a reason why you want to use 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) and not 11.10 as an example?
- Did you install Xubuntu on a clean machine? Did you format your hard drive? How did you install it?
- Did you already have Linux installed since you are referring to wallpaper and previous icons
- You say you hoped a new update would fix the problems. Which update is that?
- Have you tried to get help from askubuntu.com or ubuntuforums.org?

Regards,
Peter Dam (SwitchDK)

Hello.  Thank you for responding.  I downloaded to newest distribution of xubuntu called oneiric ocelot 11.10, and with the restart my desktop has been restored as well as my icons.  I think you are right maybe some important packages did not install correctly in maverick meerkat.  Anyway the upgrade seems to have fixed the problem.

I have one little other question maybe you can advise me on.  At the end of the Oneiric upgrade, ther was an option to uninstall obsolete program/packages I think it was called, and I accidentally bypassed this.  I wonder if you know if this will cause problems and if it is important, how may I do this manually?  Thank you very much for your help!

That is great to hear that an installation of 11.10 has solved the problems for you.

It is not a problem at all that you bypassed the question and it shouldn't cause any problems to remove obsolete software (I have never had any problems with it at least). It is always possible to remove the obsolete packages by using the command line as an example. Follow these steps to remove the obsolete software:

1. Open a terminal
2. Type the following command: sudo apt-get autoremove
3. Answer "Y" to the question if you really want to remove the not used software

That should do it.

If you are happy and it is all working now, can you please mark this launchpad question Solved.

Many thanks,
Peter Dam (SwithchDK)

Thank you Switch, I will go ahead and mark the issue as solved.  Just one last note for reference since you asked in a previous reply, I have a dell 1501 laptop which originally had xubuntu karmic koala freshly installed from a clean formatted hard drive.  I had it installed by a techy guy at my local discount computer repair shop, and had my hard drive partitioned 40/60 with linux(xubuntu), and windows vista home basic on a 120 gig hard drive.  I have had horrible problems with windows vista which was the stimulation to try and learn linux.

Highest Regards

NMM
