Ubuntu vs. Win XP

Asked by Don

I have a question about using Ubuntu 7.10 vs. Windows XP. I have Ubuntu installed on my laptop and I do like it the only thing is it lacks the hardware to use some of the nice effects that Ubuntu has to offer. I don't play too many games on my PC due to the fact that I need to do a major upgrade, which I cannot afford right now. I used Wine a little, but never got a chance to use it on my system demanding apps. My question is do you think it would be a good idea to put Ubuntu 7.10 on my main system?

System specs are:
P4 2.8 ghz
2 gigs of corsair memory
320 gig hard drive
intel 845PERL mobo.
Xfx Geforce 7800 GS (AGP)

only I play now on there is maybe once in a while is DoD: S and I would like to try COD 4 and possibly Gears of War anything other then that may need a major upgrade. I'm just really curious if I'll have any problems getting nvidia drivers to install and work fine.

Thanks in advance,

Don

Those specs should be more than enough. If you are still worried you can try out xubuntu instead. Thats meant for older computers but I believe 7.10 should work fine. I use a 7600 mobile in my laptop and was able to run beryl with all of its effects and no problems. I doubt you will have any problems with compiz fusion.

Oh and about nvidia drivers. Just enable the restricted drivers. I am using kubuntu so im not entirely sure how you do it in ubuntu, but I think its something like this.

System >> administration >> Restricted Drivers Manager and enable it from there
Also make sure you are able to download from repositories.
Hope this helps and good luck :)

Thanks I'll be thinking more about this weekend. I need to work on my Jeep first off so I can find some time I may go ahead and keep some files and install Ubuntu.

If its any use to you,
I use an Athlon 2000+ XP 1.667 Ghz, with 512 DDR ram, GeForce 4 64Meg AGP 8x. 80Gig HD.
My system is fast, faster than XP to be honest.

I dumped XP to go Ubuntu 7.04 to 7.10

And I don`t regret it.

Did you guys need to compile the kernal at all? I have a buddy that installed it and said it is running a little slow and was trying to figure out why.
