Gutsy Gibbon wont Shutdown

Asked by gamingspartan

I just installed Gutsy Gibbon on my Old Dell XPS T500 and LOVE IT! The only problem that I have is I cannot for life of me get the computer to shut off without me physically having to press the power button. After I press the shutdown button the ubuntu bar goes away the hard drive/fans even makes the shutting down noise and the Nums loc caps lock and scroll lock on my keyboard all flash but it just stay frozen on the Ubuntu scree. Please help I know very little about Gutsy.

Could be the age of the box. I have a 3 year old P4 and run into this
problem once in a while. Never did figure it out, so I just put up
with, "once in a while".

Peace.................ed

I don't really know your computer, but there is one possible method that might fix this behavior. You might have luck if you force acpi. Open up the grub menu file with root permissions, by typing this command:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Next, look in that file for the kernel line of the Ubuntu entry that you usually use when you start your computer. Mine looks something like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=1b22475d-ae37-4aec-b397-a7ff6c085070 ro quiet splash

So, now that you have found your appropriate line, add the "acpi=force pci=noacpi" options to the end of the command, like so:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=1b22475d-ae37-4aec-b397-a7ff6c085070 ro quiet splash acpi=force pci=noacpi

I hope this works for you! My computer works without it, so I don't use this option, but I have heard that others had luck with it.

Best,

Peter

I was simply indicating to you that I had the same problem. Are you
using the icon to do the logging out or the command line..sudo
reboot? Mine seems to work better when I use the icon. YMMV
