can't use compiz on dapper

Asked by dumpa

I have installed compiz (i think) but don't know how to start.

I have Gutsy on another computer and works fine, I really love it. I want to use it on a laptop with dapper but I haven't found any tutorial or forum that works for me.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Is there a way I can upgrade from dapper to gutsy without having to run a complete instalation?

thankx

I'm not sure about getting compiz to run on dapper, but I would definitely encourage you to upgrade. Dapper was great but the speed of development in Ubuntu is amazing. Gutsy makes dapper seem like it's ancient. Upgrading, however, will be a pain. You will have to upgrade one version at a time: dapper -> edgy -> feisty -> gutsy. Chances are that will fail somewhere and if not it will take a long time. You could download gutsy and install it faster. Obviously a new install will require you backing up all your stuff. I set up my computers with /home on its own partition. That way I can reinstall at anytime and not worry too much about files (although I keep them backed up anyway to be safe).

If Dapper is working for you just install XCompiz on it (I know it's
posibble because I managed to do it :-)

Once that is said you will be able to update form dapper straight to hardy
(the LTS 8.04) coming next year. So If it's only compiz yu are missing just
try to install it, and wait to next year for the upgrade from LTS to LTS
release

For compiz on dapper try this: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#Eye_Candy

It's kind of painful to follow the whole thing, but it really does work...
Just be aware of what graphic chip/card you use.. I was lucky to have a
Intel chip.

Good luck!
