Problem updating Firefox

Asked by newbuntu

I just installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my PC!

This is a great experience! It is very clean and functional, and it also weans me away from the clutches of M$!

I am running into some problems, though, and I don't know how to solve them, because I could not find the user's guide.

I am trying to download Google toolbar, and I got the message that it does not support the older version of Firefox that came with Ubuntu, and asked me if I would like to download the latest version of Firefox. It then takes me to Mozilla site, and I downloaded the new version of Firefox.

I just don't know how to install it!!!!

I have a PC with Pentium II, 333 MHz, 128MB RAM , CD ROM drive and DSL connection

I could use help!

Also, information about User's would be very helpful, and I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

ubuntu 5.10 is quite old, it was launched in oct 2005, and we are already in 2007, 2 years of development have passed since.
You will be running into a number of incompatibility issues all the time, especially with internet stuff which generally uses new stuff.
But you can find an alternate version of the toolbar that can work for you, here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=google&status=4

Documentation for current ubuntu versions is here: https://help.ubuntu.com/
Documentation for your old version is not avaliable anymore.

I suggest you install the latest version for an improved experience. Based on the low ammount of RAM your computer has, I suggest you try xubuntu's latest version:
www.xubuntu.org
Or maybe fluxbuntu:
www.fluxbuntu.org

good luck.

ClovisFabricio,

Thank you very much for your very prompt and informative response.

There is one other issue that I learned about:

The BIOS is 1999 version, and the latest Ubuntu v 7.10 and newer
require a BIOS of 2000version or newer. I wonder if this would cause
a problem with xubuntu or flexubuntu.

I would really appreciate your response!

Thanks!

Have a great day!

Hi Clovis,

First, I downloaded it on another computer and burnt a CD.
Then I used this CD to boot, and it just went on and on listing all
the issues for more than 6 hours, with nothing taking me to the login
screen!

Really, really strange!
