evolution import assistant

Asked by alleykat

When I try to import my data file from Thunderbird the Evolution import assistant is greyed out in the file type dialogue box. Also after I try to retrieve the file I want the "next" button is also greyed out. I've downloaded a newer release of evolution, but can't see how to install it...please help on both fronts!
Thank you
am using feistyfawn on Dell inspiron e1405 with xp loaded as well.

evolution won't see your XP's thunderbird.

You must, on windows:

1) Import all outlook mail into thunderbird
2) Copy your sbd folder from thunderbird to a pen drive, network, etc so you can move it to linux

This sbd folder is generally inside C:\Documents and Settings\Your User\Application Data\Thunderbird
Something like "Outlook Mail.sbd" copy the entire folder

3) Boot Ubuntu
4) install thunderbird using package manager synaptic, add/remove applications, or command line.
5) Run thunderbird and configure it for it to register as "already ran for the first time", then quit thunderbird.
6) Enter your home folder, inside there is a .thunderbird hidden folder (you have to choose to show hidden files to see this)
7) Copy the folder you got from XP's thunderbird inside this folder.
8) Open thunderbird again. Mail from windows should be visible.
9) Open evolution and import from thunderbird.
10) Remove thunderbird if you like

Ok, I followed your good directions, but the problem is in the import assistant, when I come the last step of the import process the button for "finish" is greyed out and I'm unable to complete the import procedure

In which step are you having trouble with import? From my numbered directions, there are two steps where import is required. Are you on step 1 or 9?

1 at step nine, in the evolution Import Assistant Dialogue.
the "file type" option is unavailable.
I nevertheless go through the import procedure, when I have the file I THINK I want and click on it, the "finish" button on the assistant is unavailable.
This could indicate I've chosen the wrong file, but I've tried all the files in the mail folder.

alternate route:

2 You suggested I import from tbird, I chose "import data from older program" I get the message "PIne, netscape, ....not available"

I have just successfully imported my address book. I did this by
exporting them from Thunderbird in a .cvs format, which Evolution
understands. The rest of the operation worked beautifully!
thank you for your help.
