Ubuntu heavy network activity when I'm away.

Asked by 88tuner

I've added a network monitor to my Ubuntu Panel and I've noticed that the network activity goes to the top when I'm not using my computer but when I connect with firefox, the activity stops and the normal activity from firefox starts. If I let it sit for a while, like right now while I'm typing, it slowly starts to build again until I use the connection. Is there a virus or is Ubuntu doing something behind the scenes with my connection? This is bad for me since I use three computers at my desk and the bandwidth is hogged up by Ubuntu.

Try opening a terminal and run 'sudo netstat -tp' to see which processes are using the network.

do you download stuff from amule or frostwire[limewire] those sharing site will ping your ip for a while after your stop using them,
if not then install etherape and wireshark and watch your network for activities.

Can you help with this problem?
