No sound in Gutsy Gibbon

Please try this open the:
System-> Administration-> Users and Groups-> click on your user-name under Users tab->Properties->User Privilege tab-> tick Use Audio Devices
Make a logout and a login with your user.

If it don't work try add your user to the audio group: open a terminal from Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:
sudo adduser your-username audio
give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
Make a logout and a login with your user.

Also check your devices volume by double click on the loudspeaker upper right icon.

Thanks elart.it but my user name was already allowed in audio, I tried both options but still no sound.

Sorry if you've already tried this, but

In a terminal, run alsamixer

This opens a simple GUI.

# Left/Right arrows select channels;

# up/down arrows increase/decrease levels;

# the 'm' key toggles mute on and off (NB Make sure there are no channels muted - i.e. with MM at the bottom)

Thanks Diana, everything I have tried so far says that I should be hearing noise but nothing as yet. I also have Vista on this laptop and the sound works fine so I know its not hardware that is causing the problem.
