dif editor instead of unified diff during upgrade

Asked by DonQuichote

When I adapted configuration files and upgrade, I get a confirmation window that:
- shows a unified diff to apply
- allows me to keep the old file
- allows me to apply the diff entirely (=replace with new config file)

For me as a php developer, a unified diff can be read if it is small enough. I don't think that a new ubuntu user should be presented with a unified diff at all. Choosing between leaving and replacing is choosing between two wrong answers. What I would like to see in such a case is that a diff editor could be started, allowing me to resolve the conflict between the old and the new config file, thus being able to provide the RIGHT answer to the question of what should be done with the config file.

Hope this helps in making ubuntu better.

what you would want to do is write up a spec, possibly even a bug report
if you think it is that vital, and try to get people to take it up, or
do it yourself, and submit patches. This is simply a way for us to
answer support tickets, we can't do much here for feature requests.
