Ubuntu 11.04 alpha: Screen freezes on use of Update Manager

Try:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade

One of my friends experienced the same thing before.

What he ended up doing was running update manager in terminal. Run the two commands below to do this:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Once he updated to Ubuntu 10.10 this issue seems to go away. We think it may have been a mixture of a slow machine and corrupt databases.

Please tell me if that works?

Also what is the specification of your machine and what is it doing when it stops?

Thanks.  I will try your suggestion and come back to you. The machine is a quad core AMD Phenom with maximum RAM so speed of machine is not a problem.  When it freezes it has just started the download and is doing nothing else.

Thank you.  Use of terminal successful but it still begs the question Why did Update Manager Freeze the machine? Is there a bug in the code or is it an unusual occurrence.  If it happens regularly after release then it is a potentially serious problem.
Anyway thank you again and hopefully the update may have solved the problem

You could try running update manager in terminal and see if there are any errors posted there.

Surely a person like you (loads of karma!!!) cannot dismiss a problem like this by saying 'No idea dude, it's all I use ;)' and reporting that as an answer. Because if this is an issue then it could affect new users trying to use Ubuntu as it would ruin their experience.

Also as I have seen this issue myself on another machine so there must be a reason for it doing this. Furthermore most new users aren't going to expect to be typing commands into terminal just to update.

I know that it is in natty so not a official release yet. But surely, if this issue persists, then this should be investigated further?
