I have just installed ubuntu and have no sound

Asked by redpale

When I test drove Ubuntu from the cd I had sound. When I installed the program no more sound. I listen to internet radio and required flash drive and installed it in the appropriate files according to instructions. Still no sound.

When I double click on the volume control icon I get the following message: no volume control gstreamer plugins and/or devices found. As my technical expertise is extremely limited if any one has an answer if you could make it real simple it would be appreciated. TKS

Since you had sound on the LiveCD, I'm going to take a guess and say your user account may not have the proper rights for sound.

Try this: go to System> Administration> Users and Groups> click on your user-name under Users tab> Properties> User Privilege tab> check Use Audio Devices.
Log out and back in, make sure your sound is not muted in the volume applet.

If that does not work, please post the output from "lspci"

Still not working

Additional info: when I click on the volume icon I get another message stating "The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means that you do not have the right GStreamer plugins installed or that you do not have a sound card configured. You can remove the volume control from the panel by right clicking the speaker icon ......" " Sound card etc all work under "XP"

Did your user have the "Use audio devices" checked?

Please open a terminal and type "lspci" (without the quotes) and post the output here.

Hi, ubuntu got installed correctly (or so it seems), but there was no sound either in the live Cd or in the actual system, but my sound works fine in xp.

Also, when the ubuntu system starts up, it shows some messages saying "boot entry different from boot backup" or something like that. Below is the multimedia part of the output when I type "lshw" on the terminal. Please help me out.

After much poking around I have found that when I installed Ubuntu it "mutted" my audio card ... do not know why. I went into windows and finally found the problem and "un-mutted" the audio. It fixed the problem TKS for those who volunteered to help
