change back from ubuntu to windows xp

Asked by sonam

Problems;
I could not (even after days of trying and searching internet) configure my canon printer and epson photoscanner to get working with ubuntu 6.06
But after installing ubuntu the computer did have some problems and the cpu works now most of the time for 100%, and again i cannot find the problem.
Windows works, but slow. But ubuntu has given up ( there is a long list in the recoverymode that ends;root#), and i cannot work with it anymore and the cd doesn't start. So i guess that means there is somewhere a conflict.
Problem is also i am a newbie in the linux system, so i know hardly anything about how to work with the commands.
I have an intel celeron cpu 2 processor. My hard disc has a claritysystem (i will never buy again a computer with this system) and 2 partitions. Ubuntu staat op een aparte hard disc. Both hard discs did not give problems before.
I should prefer to have both systems, but at the moment i will be happy when windows is working. And try a linux system again over a few months when i plan to buy another computer.
Thanks for the help
sonam

Hi Sonam

Try connecting the printer before starting the system and try configuring your printer. I am facing the same problem with Ubuntu being slower since I have lower memory. Ubuntu works reasonably well only with 500 MB upwards RAM. U can try reinstalling the Ubuntu from the WinXP through Xubi. It makes it easier and takes care of all nitty-gritty of partioning etc..

Best of luck

It still doesn't work. I have 512 mb ram, which should be enough. Before the ubuntu crash, it worked a bit slower, but ok.
What can be important is that after instaaling ubuntu, the computer sometimes spontaneously was crashing.

Do you went for updates? Sometimes installing updates causes this problem and I had faced it too..

Another suggestion I can offer at this time, try uninstalling Ubuntu completely and install Xubuntu.. It may help you..!!

if you really want to get Ubuntu of (so that Windows starts up again without grub bootloader) you should take a few steps to fix the master boot record of windows.
Put the Windows OS cd in the drive, make sure he starts up cd-rom first.
Go to Repair windows, and select the windows installed on your system. If i am correct you have to type an administrator password, but you have to leave it empty. (my expirience is that it won't accept the password you normally use booting windows.)
you will end up in a commandscreen, then just type fixmbr (fix masterbootrecord), if it has any questions just say yes.
After this your Windows should boot normally again.

While we're at it, you should give the current release 8.10 another try. A *lot* has changed since 6.06, and while 6.06 has "long term support", newer releases will most probably be much more likely to recognize your hardware properly.
You don't need to install it right away, you can try it out without modifying your hard disk setup, using the live CD feature, or you can even "install it in Windows", where it can be easily be removed again: http://wubi-installer.org/

@munchanco: Please open a new question here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
Nobody will notice it in this thread.
