Have you followed the guide about booting from usb?:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

If so what is the exact problem? Booting starts and fails or the usb is not detected as bootable at all.

Sorry, but you probably need to provide more information if anyone is to help you.

How did you place ubuntu on this usb, this is a big external usb hard drive or a small flash drive? The drive is detected bootable means that the system starts to boot? Does it print any error?

I've read through this guide, it looks all right, nevertheless it has a lot of steps, and a lot of things that could have gone wrong. Are you sure that you've done it all properly?

There is a note on this site, that i think is worth trying:
"Note: If your having trouble getting Ubuntu to boot, your memory stick may have a corrupted MBR. To repair the MBR of your USB device, at the terminal type sudo apt-get install lilo then type lilo -M /dev/sdx (replacing x with the letter of your flash device)"

Could you give the exact error message about that floppy please.

This error would mean that something with syslinux is wrong, maybe you can retry steps 13-14. For doing that mbr repairing any linux would be ok.

Instructions for knoppix and pclinuxos are quite different there -- those systems are meant to be used from an external device, and ubuntu is rather designed to be installed.

Sorry, but how did you do steps 2 to 15 of that tutorial if you can't boot from ubuntu cd??

hello,

I do only these because I use Windows XP:
1.Create a folder named USBU on your computer
2.Download ub7convert.zip and extract the files to the USBU folder
3.Move the Ubuntu 7.04 ISO downloaded earlier to the USBU folder
Click fixu.bat from the USBU folder (follow on screen instructions)
4.Move all files from the ubuntu directory to your memory stick
5.Reboot your computer and set your system BIOS to boot from USB-HDD or
USB-ZIP. Or, if your system lists the USB device as a hard drive, set the
"Hard Disk Boot Priority" to boot your USB device.

Thanks a lot...

That's what i've feared :) This has no chance to work, you need to do all the steps 1-15 and 1-6.
For steps 1-15 you can use another bootable linux cd (e.g. knoppix) but some small changes would be necessary. You can use another computer for that also.

Maybe it's possible to do this all from windows, but figuring out how to would probably be much harder than finding a computer with cd, usb and linux.

For a start you would get syslinux from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/, and try to use it under windows (there is a windows executable in those archives), hoping that your usb has already proper partitions.

Another option is to try wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/), it is unsupported but you can use it totally from windows.
