Learning Linux/Ubuntu/Unix - Newbie

Asked by Andrew Marshall

I am very average PC user and I've migrated to Ubuntu on the strength of reviews as the most user friendly version and, as I'm led to believe, most popular distro (see I'm learning the lingo already). I had a 99% success rate in the installation, with some minor issues. I want to try and solve some of the problems, hopefully by myself; however - with no disrepect to others in this and other forums, I find that most well meaning people who are happy to help tend to speak in a very strange language. I certainly want to be able to learn Ubuntu as a User and who knows, maybe something more technical but should I learn Unix, buy a book on Ubuntu or is there a website for beginners - or perhaps I should try all methods? Living in Asia I rely on Amazon as a life line. With Ubuntu issuing major upgrades every 6 months I wonder if you can find books printed quickly enough before the next version is released. Many thanks and - Here endeth the book lol

Welcome to Linux, Andrew! :)

A book for beginners is useful. Maybe you can find it in a public library, so you won't have to buy it, but as distros evolve very quickly a book from 2006 should be avoided. So check the publication date. There are quite a few books targeted towards beginners, also from an Ubuntu point of view. Here are a few:

The Official Ubuntu Book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-Ubuntu-Book-Benjamin-Hill/dp/0132435942/ref=pd_sbs_b_4/026-2129149-0354810?ie=UTF8

Moving to ubuntu: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/032142722X

Beginning Ubuntu Linux: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beginning-Ubuntu-Linux-Novice-Professional/dp/1590596277/ref=pd_sbs_b_1/026-2129149-0354810?ie=UTF8

As for beginners sites on Internet, there are loads of them. They're so many I don't know what to mention ... But I recommend these at least:

Essential Ubuntu 7.04 guides and manuals: http://www.futuredesktop.com/ubuntu7.04.html#guides
Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" Starter Guide: http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty
Ubuntu Desktop Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/index.html
Community Ubuntu Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community
Linux Basics: https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/linux-basics.html
13 Things to do immediately after installing Ubuntu: http://linuxondesktop.blogspot.com/2007/05/13-must-do-things-on-new-ubuntu-704.html

Good luck!
