Network configuration panel is at System-->Administration-->Network.

What type of connection are you trying to set up? Connecting through other computer on local network or modem?

I am trying to open a wireless connection of my laptop computer. Truth to tell, I am not a technical person. I went thru the Network configuration panel at System>Administration>Network but I don't see any "Networking" label in it and the phrase "enable this connection". I you can assist me with this, I would really appreciate it and thank you for the email.

What do you see when you run this network applet? No wireless card by any chance. If there is one try choosing it and clicking preferences. What type of card do you have?

Open a terminal and type "iwconfig". Copy and paste here.

You may want to install some additional software to help you set this up. For example there is Wi-Fi Radar or Wireless Assistant in the universe (To enable universe repositories run synaptic: System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager, and check it in Settings-->Preferences, then you can install them with Add/Remove, the internet category).
