Did you MD5 test the ISO you put on the USB?
How did you put Ubuntu on the USB stick?

Found out by reading similar problems that a Ubuntu 10.06 cannot be built on a Ubuntu 10.10 system.
Downloaded Ubuntu 10.10. Checked Md5 ok. Stick ran fine.
problem solved.
