Sounds like your proxy is misconfigured.

1) Do *not* use a pac file to configure your proxy in the proxy settings -- "pac" means "proxy auto configuration", this is actually a javascript program designed to execute in a web browser. This will not work; use the "manual" proxy settings.

2) At any rate, it is unlikely that your pac file is in that location -- as that particular address is invalid (pac is not a valid top-level-domain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-level_domain), I think). You probably just want to set your proxy to "proxy.nycboe.org" -- though without knowing the configuration of your local network, I cannot confirm this without looking at the contents of the file

http://proxy.nycboe.org/proxy.pac

And am unable to access this without being on your local network. Random internet searching suggests that (and this may be out of date), that your proxy settings could be: "proxy.nycboe.org" and your port is 8002

You may need to ask your local admin for the actual proxy settings, as I said, this could be out of date.

Thanks for answering. At home I have Verizon DSL. I don't have to go over the proxy.

When I set Firefox to : 'Auto detect proxies'

and Netwwork proxy to: Direct internet connection

I am connected but still get the following text when updating.

First the system update says, 'No New Updates last update 176 days ago.' Yet it wants me to get New Distribution release 8.10

I, then, 'Check' only to get the following text that makes no sense since I'm not on the nycboe network now.

There's no proxy to resolve.

This answered my question indirectly. I happened to look at the Synaptic Package Manager only to notice that there, too, Was a Settings menu with Preferences. Once I clicked on that I saw a Network Preferences tab. WIthin that tab I saw that I had to un-click the proxy tab on Network and set it on direct connection to internet. That finally allowed a waterfall of overdue updates to be downloaded. Thanks for your time.
