cannot install ubuntu flash

Asked by Rohit Pande

Hi. I recently downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and enabled it to install using my flash drive. however when the computer is booted the following happens:

1. the ubuntu screen comes up and gives me the option of installing ubuntu or try it from my flash disk
2. on selecting 'install' the next screen asks me if i have sufficient memory, etc and asks me to tick upgrade and 3rd party software, both of which i do. however on clicking forward nothing happens apart from the mouse cursor changing to the 'wait' mode.

i tried re-doing it by unclicking the 3rd party options; however there is still no change to the response.

is there something wrong here or is it normal for the installation to wait here for an extended period of time? I believe from the website that this should quickly move on to the next screen and the installation process (the time consuming one) takes place later.

thanks and regards,
Rohit

The options "Download Updates while installing" and "Install 3rd party software" require a running Internet connection. It might be that you are connected to a network but not able to connect to Internet at the time of installation. Try removing both the options and the it should work fine.

Hi

Thanks a lot for your prompt response. I tried this but there is unfortunately still no difference. The cursor remains in 'thinking' mode and there is no further response. :(

Do u think I should reformat the flash drive and try again?

Please post what software you used to create the start up disk.

Also try booting into a live session and run "Install into Hard disk" option.
If it does not work still, try formatting and recreating live USB drive.

If the problem persists, please file a bug (preferably using apport).

Hi rohit

Thanks for your advice. The flash drive-based install was not responding as before so I I tried doing it via cd and it worked ok. Thanks a lot.

My next problem is that I am unable to connect to the Internet. I use a wireless network which my computer has no problem in connecting with. However websites do not open. Am I required to enter any information under 'Network Connections' like DNS or IPv4 or IPv6 settings or should I leave the method as 'automatic' which is the default?

Thanks and regards,
Rohit
