Cannot install Ubuntu 7.04 on my LG R500 Notebook

Asked by Frank Pertack

Hello,
too bad that it is not possible to install Ubuntu 7.04 on my Notebook LG R500 with Santa Rosa Chipset
(I could already install it without problems on my relatively new Desktop, but on my new Notebook it always interrupts the installation).
After selecting any install-option I can see the kubuntu-screen for several seconds but then it stops installing and comes up with the following failure-message:

"BusyBox v1.1.3(Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in Shell (ash). Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off (init ramfs)"

Can anybody help me? I think ubuntu is a nice and quick linux distribution and I really like to install it on my notebook soon.

Thank you very much in advance.

Did you try the different options in the menu? Worth a try.

Then I think it's a problem with your DVD drive not recognized.
Usually this trick will solve it:

when you reach the first menu of the CD, instead of hitting "ENTER", hit the 'e' key
It will allow you to edit the settings.
You should see several lines, move on the longest one, then hit 'e' again
You can then modify this line. There should be plenty of options, delete 'splash' and 'quiet' (this will allow you to see what actually happen during boot), and add 'all_generic_ide'
then hit 'b' (for 'boot'), it will then boot using those options.

Hopefully it should solve your problem. If not, or if you don't understand my explanations (sorry about my frenglish), tell me, and I will try to make it clearer with some screen caps.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer.

I don't exactly know how Frenglish looks like, but if it is like Genglish, I could not discover any mistake. That was no problem at all.
I will try out your proposal and tell you if it works out.

Thank you again

Hi Francois,
no, that didnt solve the problem.
Selecting all_generic_ide brings me a little further, but it hangs then when it comes tologging in. Feisty seems to have a lot of trouble with the new Santa Rosa Chipset.
I tried out Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5, there the life CD works fine and it installed o.k., but when trying to start the kubuntu after logging in, it seems it has forgotten all it knew when running from CD:
A black screen with lots of red (and green) ASCII - Symbols appear (no error messages) and the system hung up. I tried several times, but no success.

I am afraid Ubuntu is not ready yet for these nice notebook machines. I hope I don't have to wait too long.

I have a Dell XPS M1330, Santa Rosa also, working almost perfectly. I guess you are just a bit unlucky. Usually you may have some problems with a few devices, but an unusable system, that's a pity.

In recovery mode, can you boot it and access to the logs? There may be some hints there.
Otherwise did you try to look into google using your laptop reference and "ubuntu" or just "linux"? You can't be the only one trying this :)

I have LG E500, and i solve this problem doing the installation from USB stick instead DVD.

And have more problems when ubuntu was finally installed: i cant burn cd/dvd (but it can read) and wireless don't work (madwifi not support current artheos chipset)

Thank you for your answers.
I expect that Gutsy Gibbon will solve this problem. I tried out Suses new 10.3 RC1 Edition and EVERYTHING works fine (SuSe 10.2 had the same problems as Ubuntu 7.04). So I wait some weeks and then I hope that Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon can handle the new hardware.

Hi,

I am facing the same problem while trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 in my new Dell Vostro 1400 laptop.

I boot from the CD using Dell's F12 option after which I get the Ubuntu installation progress icon. Then the message "/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off (init ramfs)"' comes on the command screen.

Did anyone try the same with Gusty Gibson? Please Help.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I have the same exact problems. I have an lg e500 and the desktop cd doesn't work. The alternate cd works fine though. There's also an issue with the nvidia 8400m g and i can;t get the drivers to work properly. The wireless needs ndiswrapper and works but it is not very stable, it loses connection sometimes and the reception is really lower than in windows. I have installed gutsy also. There, everything seems to work (the wifi still through ndiswrapper) but the gnome power manager has issues. It dims the screen randomly and doesn't get the battery/ac state correctly sometimes. So i'll wait for some updates. I'll install gutsy, put the kubuntu desktop and work under kde for some time (hopegully it won't be using gnome's power manager) and wait till some update notification for the gnome power-manager pops-up.
