Why not use MediaWiki on Ubuntu Wiki?

Asked by Mads Peter Rommedahl

Hi

For some time now, I've wondered about why the Ubuntu Wiki [1] and [2] is using MoinMoin as an engine, and not MediaWiki.

As Wikipedia continues to grow, more and more people grow accustomed to MediaWiki's intuitive way of editing and creating pages - why does Ubuntu use such a relatively hard-to-learn engine as MoinMoin? As far as I can see, MediaWiki would suit Ubuntu just fine as a platform upon which to build a comprehensive wiki of documentation.

Is mediawiki open source? If not, that is the probably the reason. If it is,
then I really don't know.

Yes, MediaWiki is GPL'd, and is constantly being developed and stable and stuff.
