Dual boot VISTA/UBUNTU startproblem

Asked by Otto van Lookeren

It is impossible for me to install UBUNTU 7.04 with the live CD on my new HP notebook Pavilion dv 9580ED. ( AMD Turion (tm) 64 X2 Mob.Techn. TL-56, 2 GB RAM ) with MS WINDOWS VISTA Home Premium.
After starting the CD, via ENTER, the drivers are loaded and then the screen turns "black" , the pc does not react anymore and can only be switched off by the ON/OFF-knob.
HP is not willing to give support, though they install LINUX in other countries.
I read a lot of things on various sites, but i hope that someone was able to find a good solution, that works in a simple way.
Thanks in advance,
Otto van Lookeren.

Looks like it could be some limitations from HP... That's not the easiest brand for dual booting ;)

Otto, first thing, did you try different options at boot? The menu should offer several choices. It may be worth a try.

Then if it's still not working, instead of just hitting the ENTER key, could you hit 'e' (for 'edit), it will then show you the different settings for the boot. Move onto the longest line, type 'e' again, it should allow you to edit the options.
Move to the end of the line, look for 'quiet' and 'splash', delete them, and then press 'b' (for 'boot'). It should then try to boot the LiveCD, but with more information on the screen. This way we would maybe know where it stops exactly. That would help, as currently we have no idea where is the problem.

Dear Francois,
Your first thing was right, after selecting the "safe graphics mode" to
start, it is possible to boot UBUNTU.
Thanks and regards,
Otto.

Francois,
As you did expect, I was not able to install UBUNTU in the "safe graphics mode".
I got the installation screen, but could not minimize the screen size (800x600) to see the complete information on the screen.
The installation started and stopped at making the correct partition (28GB).
Your other suggestion to hit 'e' (for edit) did not work.
When using an other UBUNTU 6.10 CD I got the information "screen not found".
I think MS or HP did build in a restriction to install UBUNTU.
Regards, Otto.

Francois,
The problem is I can not get the bottom of the window with the buttons, even your instruction with "ALT" etc. to move the window does not work, so I am not able to take the right decisions.
Do you have another idea?
Regards, Otto.

At boot, when you choose the options, I think there are some for the screen resolution. Check for the function buttons instruction at the bottom. Try to change the resolution using this.

Then I'm a bit surprised that the ALT function is not working. You must hold ALT, then left click and hold on the window. Just like when you are moving it using the title bar, except that you hold ALT at the same time.

Another solution, maybe you can try to plug an external monitor on the computer? Maybe it will display with a bigger resolution?

The "ALT" function did work ( I did not "hold" the left click ). So we were able, by seeing the buttons, to install UBUNTU completely.
The only thing that was not possible in UBUNTU was to set the resolution to a value higher than 800x600. May be you have another instruction / suggestion for that point.
After all I made a wrong partition so I have UBUNTU removed, but I will install it again.
I am very grateful for all your help. Regards.

I guess we can fix it too. Most problems are fixable, believe me ;)

Do you know the resolution of your screen?
And also the model of your graphic card?

Revision history for this message
Otto van Lookeren (ph-o-v-lookeren) said :

Screen resolution in UBUNTU is 800x600. (a lower resolution is also possible).
The graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS.
UBUNTU has been installed again.

François Tissandier (baloo) said :

I meant what resolution would you like? 1280x800 I guess?

Did you try to open the restricted driver manager to see if it proposes to install a Nvidia driver?

I was not able to install the nVidia driver: Geforce 8400M GS. This driver is not mentioned in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsNvidia . So I think I have to wait? Or:" Most problems are fixable, believe me" , as you said earlier, do you have another idea? Regards.

You might give envy a try.

http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

I don't know the status of drivers for the new generation of nvidia cards but the guy who does envy tries pretty hard to make it work so if your card can work in ubuntu that may be your best bet.

François Tissandier (baloo) said :

Gutsy will support it. I have this card working on my Dell laptop.

As Jim advised, the best solution for you is to use Envy, or to install the driver. Envy will be much easier.
You could also edit your configuration file manually, enter the right resolution, and select the opensource driver for Nvidia card. It's working on my laptop too, but you won't have hardware acceleration.

I had contact with Alberto Milone. His advices were:

follow these steps:
open Terminal (or Konsole) and type:
wget -c
http://albertomilone.com/ubuntu/nvidia/scripts/envy_0.9.7-0ubuntu8_all.deb

sudo dpkg -i envy_0.9.7-0ubuntu8_all.deb

then you will see an error and you will have to type:
sudo apt-get install -f

then launch Envy from the "Applications/System tools" menu

The results were:
>> I did follow your steps, but after the last instruction (" sudo apt-get
>> install -f ") I got the message errors found in " clvm ", "
>> redhat-cluster-suite ", " system-config-cluster " and " E: Sub-process
>> /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) ".
>> It was not possible to launch Envy from the "Applications/System tools"
>> menu.
Alberto answer is:
> There's something wrong with your system. Did you install any package
> which doesn't belong to Ubuntu's official repositories (apart from
> Envy)?

My answer to Alberto (2007-09-25) is:
I am just starting with UBUNTU, have no other experience.

Francois,
After the results of 2007-09-25 I made up my mind and want to stop with
UBUNTU, because I think there are too much troubles/challenges. I rather
wait a while untill a new UBUNTU-version is available. Can you help me with
the correct method to uninstall UBUNTU and the "GRUB loading"-screen. When I
removed earlier the UBUNTU-partition out of VISTA I could not remove the
"GRUB loading"-screen.
After all I thank you and your colleagues for all the support.
Regards, Otto.

If you are using Vista, you can use the Vista CD to fix the boot I think. I don't know the name of the command though.

Once it's done (the computer will boot vista directly), you can just delete and reuse the Ubuntu partitions. But please, be careful, to delete partitions is always dangerous :)

Dear Francois,
I started with UBUNTU 7.10 and the previous problems were solved.
One problem is left.
I am not able to make a wireless interface with the Broadcom BCM 4312.
I have downloaded the "firmware for BCM43XX" with the result that the
module was switched on.(LED: red to blue).
With the instruction "sudo lshw -C network" from "Help-- Trouble shooting"
I got the information:

-network
       description: Wireless interface
       product: BCM4312 802.11a/b/g
       vendor: Broadcom Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0
       logical name: eth1
       version: 02
       serial: 00:00:00:1a:73:73
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet
physical wireless
       configuration: broadcast=yes driver=bcm43xx
driverversion=2.6.22-14-generic latency=0 link=no module=bcm43xx
multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11b/g

Compared to a good working wireless interface of another computer where
the "link=yes" is mine "link=no". To my opinion is that the problem,
because my home wireless network is not found.
The instruction "alias net-pf-10 ipv6"is set to "alias net-pf-10 off".
If anybody has an idea to complete my driver I will appreciate.
