A good video converter

Asked by Michelle Walker

I have tried WinFF and Transmegeddon. Both are slow and both leave the movie sound out of sync. When I used a YouTube converter with that Other OS, I had no problems with out of sync sound. Maybe I'm not using it correctly. I want to convert mpg4 to Avi Divx so I can play them on my media player. Any suggestions?

They kick ass, but command line is maybe not what Michelle would like to use...
Did you try Arista Transcoder? There is a profile for "DVD Player", I think DIVX is one of the format for this export.
I used it to convert some HD videos, it was quite fast. Maybe worth a try.

Not sure that Arista is what I want. I'm doing something now and the preview
is very jumpy. But I'll let it finish (it says 75 minutes!). Is ffmpeg or
mencoder in the Ubuntu software?
Also, I notice that when I do this type of function, my computer slows way
down. I didn't have this problem with the YouTube downloader.

What are you wanting to convert from - to?

mpg4 to Avi DiVx. Or youTube videos to Avi DiVx.
I'm not very savvy yet about this because I never had a problem before. But
Ubuntu takes a little more work (which is fine).

A video conversion is very heavy on processor. So it's quite normal if your computer is slowing down.

YouTube downloader is maybe not converting the video, so it's much faster.

ffmpeg and mencoder are in the software center, but they are command line applications, so you need to enter your command manually in a terminal to run them. That's why I advise first a software with a graphical interface, it's easier to use if you are not familiar with the command line.

I'm going to try the suggested apps. Thanks, this answers my question.

I've already had to enter in commands on the terminal numerous times with
other applications so that isn't a problem.
Thanks for the info about the computer slowing down. This answers my
question.
