Error 5 during Ubuntu installation

Asked by bigSQUISHY76

During installation I receive the following error:

The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

[Errno 5] Input/output error

This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.

I have cleaned the drive and the disk is new with zero blemishes, dust smudges etc...

I have burned 4 new disk all at the slowest speed.

I have struggled with several other problems leading up to this. I am almost there but can not get past this point. How do I fix this?

Hi,

You may try to check the md5sum of the iso file you have used to burn your disc.

You can also press any key when booting with the live CD (when you see the human being and keyboard image at the bottom of the screen) to get to the classic live CD menu. then you can select to test the CD for defaults, especially reading errors. If it does not pass the test,, then you know the cause of the installation failure. If the CD is ok, then ... ?

Hope that helped a little.

Please boot entirely (you must not see windows starting) from Ubuntu live install cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
Check disc for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard disk

Please select "Check disc for defects" and press enter to test if your cd-driver can read in a good way the live install cd... or if the install cd have some defective file in it.

Might be you have a faulty cdrom hardware...

Curiously asking, what is the hardware specs of your computer? You might wanna try installing via USB. A detailed instruction is found in http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download except that the ISO you will transfer is the Ubuntu one and not the netbook edition. I hope that helps.

Ok well I will run the check of the disk, however I have no clue what you are talking about when it comes to this md5sum, and even if I found it what should it look like and if it is wrong how do I correct it? i will post back after I check all 5 of the disk I have created.

I am new to the whole UNIX / Linux Ubuntu world. Everything I have read during my struggle to install dual OS on my XP computer.

Hi again,

The md5sum is used to check that the file you have downloaded is not corrupted. If it is good, its md5sum value should be the same as the original file.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum

So you us an utility (called md5sum in GNU/Linux) that will calculate the md5sum value of your downloaded file that you will compare with the md5sum value of the original file which is published on the web page from where you did your download.

You have md5sum utilities for Windows as well, if you've burned your CD from Windows:

Ok I ran the CD test. No errors found. Two things I neglected to mention. 1 i have to use the. NOMODESET. In order to get my display to show during install. And. 2 I do not get the error until I am over 50% complete with the install. Maybe this added info may help. Thank you so far.

Hi,

What is the partitioning scheme for your installation ? have you reserved enough spacing on your hard disk to install Ubuntu? You need at least 4 GB of hard disk space to install Ubuntu !

I suggest you boot the live CD and select Try Ubuntu without affecting the computer (1st choice in the live CD menu) after having selected "nomodeset" by pressing the F6 key, just to be sure that everything is OK with the CD and the harware.

I have been choosing to try without installing. Ubuntu runs great from the CD. The CD is still error free. Also. The Xp partition has about 500 gigs and the partition for Ubuntu has almost 250 gigs.

Please don't reply using mail but use your browser to manage your question...

BE ABSOLUTELY SURE you have burned a valid m5sum verified iso image...

read below... point 3

Here some general note on install Ubuntu and howto to get a good ubuntu iso cd image (.iso) to burn on a cd:

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 10.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

- Here install Ubuntu video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaqaDZZ_P0g&feature=fvw

Below there are some intructions to:
--- 1) Ubuntu prerequisites... and Ubuntu for pc with low power
--- 2) download the iso...
--- 3) check the md5sum of the iso image, please don't forget to check...
--- 4) burn the iso image to a cd ...
--- 5) install Ubuntu using the self made cd ...
--- 6) trouble screen at installation or at first boot after installation ...
--- 7) Ubuntu manual and online help...

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

--- 1) Ubuntu prerequisites: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Ubuntu 10.04.1 release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes/ChangeSummary/10.04.1

If your ram is less than the recommended amount, you won't be able to install with the graphical installer,
but you might be able to use the Alternative cd, where you can use a text based installer - that uses less memory.
If your machine does have plenty of ram, you might want to try running Memcheck (which is also an option from the live cd, see below)
to just make sure your ram isn't failing.

- if your pc doesn't meet the Ubuntu prerequisites, you can try:

xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/get
lubuntu http://lubuntu.net/blog/lubuntu-1004-now-available-download

here a list from distrowatch: http://distrowatch.com/search.php?category=Old%20computers

- if you pc is a very low resource pc you can try different Linux distribution something like:

 Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/
 Slitaz http://www.slitaz.org/ : Slitaz 3.0 release note http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/releases/3.0/relnotes.en.html

1.a) Please always prefer to download them using torrent if you can...

1.b) BE ABSOLUTELY SURE to verify the md5sum https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

1.c) burn it using infrarecorder if you are using Windows at lower speed you can do

1.d) boot your pc from cd and install...

--- 2) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button

Hi,

There are some issues with this error 5 that I found on the net. E.g.:

http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1482080

and

http://forums.sarcasticgamer.com/archive/index.php/t-21569.html

From their readings, I would suggest for you to :

- Proceed with installation without doing any import of user's data from Windows (last step before the summary installation screen)

- if it still does not work, download the alternate iso file to do a text-based installation

Of course do a md5sum check of the iso files you downloaded by installing the md5sum checker for windows.

regards
