install problems Ubuntu 7.04

Asked by freshman

hello,

I've ordered the Ubuntu cd through the website. I'm totally new to Ubuntu/Linux. When installing, I have a problem. The computer starts from the cd. I then get to the menu and choose for 'start or install ubuntu'. The screen then goes blank/black and nothing else happens anymore. I've let the computer run for hours, but it doesn't change. Sometimes an X appears on the screen and sometimes a small round thing, but that's it.
I hope you can help me.

kind regards,
Barry

Do you tried to start it in safe graphics mode ? This can helps you if you have display problems.

Hope that it helps.

Yes, I did try that. But that didn't change anything. It was exactly the same.

Oh, strange thing ! And you want to try it or install it ? Because if you just want to install it, there is another cd which is more compatible with some hardware : http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/ and choose the good alternate cd for your hardware.

P.S : please provide some infos about your hardware, in order we can search if problems were reported with and look at possible better solutions.

I think it's due to a RAM lack, you need at least 256 MB of RAM to use the live cd. Your ram capacity may be not sufficient to use Ubuntu (depending on your Ubuntu use and the speed you would it to have) so I advise you to try Xubuntu, which is a Ubuntu version with another and lighter desktop environment : "Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 64 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to use at least 128 MB RAM" (http://xubuntu.org/get#requirements) whereas Ubuntu needs more.

More informations here : http://xubuntu.org.

Xubuntu is an official "flavour" of Ubuntu, like Kubuntu or Edubuntu, and supported like the others. If you need help about it or more information, It's the same place for asking your questions. Don't forget to read requirements, and choose the cd you will use with that in mind.

Hope that it helps you. We (and I) remain at your disposition.

Hello,

I've downloaded Xubuntu and tried to install it. It gave the same problem as described above here with installing Ubuntu.
At the menu I chose 'start or install Xubuntu'. After that, a list appears that several items are being checked. It starts with: setting prelimenary keymap. It then says OK. The rest of the list also gets OK. Except for one: 'Loading hardware drivers'. There is an error: 132.720000 tco_wdt: failed to reset NO_Reboot flag, reboot disabled by hardware.
and: 132.224000 intel_rng: FWH not detetected.
The rest of the list is OK.

I checked the installing of Ubuntu again and there I noticed the same error log.

Hopefully you can help me.

with kind regards,
Barry Peters

I would use alternate cd xubuntu with your specifications, if you don't sue it already.

Nevertheless it seems to be a "Won't fix" bug in feisty:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/102982

Can you help with this problem?
