Need help installing barebones 7.04

Asked by Dreampainter

Hello,

I am a part-time *geek* when it comes to trying to get ubuntu 7.04 installed ... I am on high speed internet connection here where I live, I can boot from the CD as recommended and be online at the same time...and can work the programs while the cd is inserted in the cd tray. I can't figure out how to do it and not use the cd during the use of the computer. I want to install it. It's a Compaq Evo N610c laptop, Pentium 4, 512 MB ram, 40 GB hard drive so should have plenty room for it. I want to wipe Windows from the HD and run strictly Ubuntu eventually however cannot do that if I cant even get barebones installed...sigh...could anyone please offer me some sort of guidance? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Keith

You don't need a tutorial to install. Boot from CD, click on "install" and follow the step-by-step procedure.

"Barebones Ubuntu" is not something mainstream and common.
I believe you are refering to
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal#barebones
This is quite an advanced task to do, and having just dialup connection would make it really difficult for you. "Barebones" means no graphical interface; you would have to use the command line for all these tasks.

For your laptop specs, you may want to use something like Xubuntu (light version of Ubuntu), or you can give a try with Puppy Linux (http://www.puppylinux.org/).

Thank you, I have all the command lines as I printed out the instructions
last night when a tech on Ubuntuforums advised me to try barebones...I will
be having access to a cable connection later today so will maybe try then to
use one of the other versions or maybe puppylinux. I don't have a cd burner
on the computer in question either so it might be really difficult unless
they send free CDs too.
Thank u again

Pentium III, 256 MB RAM... I believe it is enough to run just Ubuntu, not Xubuntu or Puppy Linux. I still have a copy of Ubuntu 6.06 installed on a PIII 866 MHz, 512 MB RAM that currently serves as storage for video files for me, and it works well. I also installed Ubuntu 6.10 on a PIII 600 MHz, 256 MB for my friends, and it runs at acceptable speed, can play video, and even can play simple 3D games (the PC has an NVIDIA card in it)

Haven't received any solution but fortune smiled upon me. A friend whom sent me a link to download ubuntu also helped me greatly. What i had to do is download a program called ultimate boot disc, burn it to iso form and whip the hard drive completely. Sucess! Did the complete wipe, installed ubuntu and updated it's files thru my ethernet high speed connection.
