10.04 install caused PartitionMagic error 108 -- how research?

Asked by rlbudke

Tried to add Ubuntu10.04LTS to multi-boot system from CDdrive. Have primary, 2gig, empty partition on 3rd HDD hung off a PCI card -- which makes it a SCSI drive, I think. Converted primary partition and then split into two (one was to be boot). Was then told that partition was too small . So, I backed out w/ intention to use Partition Magic to move empty space from extended partition into the primary -- and try again.
Instead, PMagic told me that there were errors on the other two HDD (which it will not fix) and labelled the entire 3rd HDD as "bad -- error 108". I can access the 3rd HDD from either of the two other OS on the 1st HDD (i.e., WinNT and Win98se -- don't snicker, pls).
What is best fix? I want Ubuntu on that 3rd HDD, if at all possible.

For Lucid, you need at least 0.5GB of swap and 3.5GB of HDD. So 2GB is not enough.
To manage partition, you can boot on Ubuntu CD, choose option "Try Ubuntu 10.04", then System->Administration->Gparted.
Could you boot on Ubuntu CD, choose option "Try Ubuntu 10.04", open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and post result of command
   sudo parted -l
where "-l" is lower-case "L"

delance,

Attached is the result of the sudo command.

BTW, what was I supposed to be able to do in the Gparted program?  I got there and it showed how the partitions are laid out, much like PartitionMagic.  But, it didn't show a lot of the detail the sudo command did.
Also, BTW, my first attempt to open a terminal rebooted the system.  All the way back to the memory check.  That was a surprise.

Please don't answer with previous message. It makes very long posts in Launchpad.
I proposed usage of Gparted to extend size of free partition to a reasonable size, which implies to reduce the partition close to free one.
Another solution, if you have plenty of space on a disk, is to use Virtual Box to make a virtual machine under Windows. This will allow you to check Ubuntu without installing dual boot and changing partitioning.
Please, tell me which solution you choose.

delance,

OK, I can supposedly use Gparted from the CDrom to move the space around so my intended primary partition for Ubuntu installation is big enough -- >4gig.  No problem.
What, tho, about fixing the errors that PartitionMagic coughs up on all 3 HDD's?  Did the sudo command results provide an insight into fixing that?
Thx

#108 Partition doesn't end at end of cylinder
The hard-disk partition table contains erroneous values. PartitionMagic expects partitions to begin and end on the correct cylinder boundaries. If they do not, the disk may be partially corrupted. In this circumstance, if PartitionMagic were to make any modifications it might cause the loss of data. Therefore, PartitionMagic refuses to recognize any of the hard disk's partitions. To resolve this problem, see the instructions in Resolving partition table errors.

GParted have a box named "round to cylinder" when you ask to move/resize a partition.
You will need to move/resize your partitions with this option.
If you use a laptop, be sure it is plugged to main 110/220V!

Can you help with this problem?
