How to backup to an external hard disk

Asked by Saul Lubkin

I have an Ubuntu system.

There doesn't seen to be any backup software on my computer. I think backing up essentially everything to an external hard drive would be a good idea -- that way, I could totally recover from any catastrophe (either on the same computer, if still useable, or on a new one).

But first, I must figure out how to backup to an external hard drive.

Help much appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

-- Saul

Hi.

Thanks very much, Aruna!

I believe this solved my question.

I've downloaded the SystemRescueCD as an .iso file, and burned it to a fresh CD.

I next intend to buy an external hard drive, reboot from the rescue CD, and make an image of my entire hard disk on the external hd, using Partimage.

I'm a little worried that I don't see Partimage on the rescueCD when I mount it.

Hopefully, the rescuecd will be bootable, and partimage will be obvious on it.

:)

Thanks again,

Unfortunately I still have a problem -- I believe a simple one (I hope).

When using partimage, the Psedo-Graphical environment is not working in one
crucial way: When I attempt to select any option other than the default, by
pressing Enter/Return, nothing happens. Thus, the program appears to be
good only for creating a backup with gzip compression, etc. I cannot change
the defaults. (I've tried "Enter" to change a radio button, or "X" --
nothing works).

Help appreciated.

Thank you,

Sincerely yours,
