Slow ubuntu, deleting previous os
I have installed ubuntu recently to my computer, but it is really slugish, the only thing i can think of is that vista is still installed somewhere in the computer. So what id like to know is can i delete windows completely and will this improve performance of ubuntu.
Secondly could i tinker with the ram allocation to allow for faster performance.
Apologies if these are two of the most ridiculous questions you have ever come across i am not to clever when it comes to computers but i'm keen to learn.
Thanks
joe

How did you install Ubuntu? Did you use wubi or did you do a true dual boot? I doubt vista is impacting stuff.
Can you give your system spec

Hey,
I used wubi, the things that are slow are programmes opening after the password login, your prob going to laugh at this one but as im new to ubuntu i am not positive about running system spec, i tried something of a forum a moment ago but i got
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
and not sure if i want to do this as i was running a command which involved a download.
eeeeeeek

Yes, this is fine. our system is telling you how to fix the system. Run:
sudo dpkg --configure -a; sudo apt-get -f install
Your wubi is probably sow as wubi installs to the NTFS is a RUBBISH filesystem and VERY prone to fragmentation. This fragmentation will directly knock onto your wubi install as the "drive" you install to is an image file. A true Linux system does not defragment very muich at all and ext3 and ext4 are not possible to even be defragged.
I suggest you reboot into Windows and defrag you NTFS. This should make things a lot nicer. You still havent given the output of the command I asked for.

Cool the right driver is being used for VGA as ATi dont support your card with their proprietary driver.

Say yes, it will upgrade the system further. You should also run:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade
If it runs through then you are all good.

It will help, ntfs is bloody awful and will affect seek times for data in the wubi image. If you are going to reinstall ubuntu in wubi again then a defrag will help, if you are going to native install then a defrag is needed anyway. If you intend to dual boot properly then make sure your backups are recent incase of catastrophe

I suggest you to install Ubuntu NOT using Wubi.
If you have installed Ubuntu via Wubi please uninstall it read
http://
Installing Ubuntu using Wubi make Ubuntu less robust and all problems that you will have to Windows can be affect your Ubuntu partition file.
Please note that install Ubuntu using Wubi isn't the best you can do, nothing wrong, but installing a secure operative system Ubuntu into an
unsecure operative system using Wubi is not the better choice you can do: problems that come in Windows might be damage your Ubuntu
installation.
Wubi does not install Ubuntu directly to its own partition.
Wubi install Ubuntu into a big file as an image file on the NTFS partition.
So you are free to try Ubuntu in this way but if you want perform a
regular Ubuntu dual boot mode installation, to have Ubuntu partitions
isolated from Windows partitions: please made a new question.
Here more detail: http://
I strongly suggest you to install Ubuntu+Windows in dual mode creating a real Ubuntu ext3 or ext4 partition.
In this mode you can use Ubuntu and Windows ad usual and then using installed Ubuntu you can save or repair damaged (due viruses or other issue) Windows partitions data.
- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 10.04 https:/
Is very easy to install, if you need info please ask.
Welcome to Ubuntu
