Cannot get ubuntu for my netbook

Asked by Kelv

I have tried a dozen times to get Ubuntu (9.04, 9.1, 10.04 etc) for my new Asus netbook. I have downloaded torrents and written to my USB using WinRar - doesn't boot. Same for Magic ISO. I have tried 3 times to create a bootable USB from the Ubuntu website, no problem until I try to boot from it. I have tried to use the netbook CD helper on several occasions but always get the following message

Could not retrieve the required installation files

I have used the USB creator available from the ubuntu website. I have set my usb drive as the first source to boot from. No luck.
Please help because I do not want to use Windows or have only half a hard drive by running it alongside XP. I have a mass of data to load onto my netbook but I don't yet have the preferred operatinmg systtem.

Cheers

You dont write the data to the USB using WinRAR at all, the ISO *CAN* be handle by WinRAR but copying the files this way does NOT make the USB bootable. You need to transfer the data using software like unetbootin or usb-creator-gtk

Here is a program to make a USB bootable device.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.3.exe

It can even download the ISO and check it for you if you wish or you can provide the ISO yourself. Make sure to MD5 test the ISO you have downloaded so you know it is consistent and complete

First please be sure to verify the md5sum of the downoladed iso.
Then install and use unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ to made your bootable usb stick using the iso image.

Hope this helps

I have tried this but it does not work - the USB is not bootable. I get the same error message when I try to use the cd helper from within the Ubuntu distribution - could not extract the installation files.

I have downloaded the md5sum applkication but I have no idea how it works

Ok I managed to run the md5 sum and it came back with 0 errors. I was given a hash but was unable to copy and paste it to provide it here for you.

I have a feeling that I am gonna have to stick with XP

Cheers

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe

You can use that to make a bootable USB
