Ubuntu 10.04 video bug nvidia Dell Vostro 1500

Asked by Anand Reddy

After installing Ubuntu 10.04 I am unable to read my screen. I get a weird looking purple screen with vertical lines. I appears that the login screen is not displaying correctly. The screen appears like the one in this link http://photo.lujun.info/main.php?g2_itemId=5554&g2_imageViewsIndex=2 . I have a dell Vostro 1500 with an Nvidia 8400 series graphics chip. I tried upgrading from the previous version and also tried formatting my drive and installing fresh. How do I resolve this issue?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you installed with?
Did you check your CD for defects?
Have you tested your RAM?

I didn't do an MD5 test on the ISO.

However I tried 3 different methods of install.
1. Direct upgrade from previous version of Ubuntu.
2. Downloaded an ISO from one mirror and burned it on a CD. Booted from the
CD and install.
3. Downloaded ISO using a torrent and created a bootable USB. Bootel from
the USB and install.
I got the same result with all the 3 methods. From the results it is likely
that there is no issue with the ISO.

I have not done a RAM test. It works fine with the Windows 7 partition and
Ubuntu 9.10.
I will try the RAM test.

The ISO needs checking. If the ISO is bad then the install wil also be bad. Burns can also be bad so boot to the CD. When you see the stickman press SPACE and select "Check CD for defects". Bad CDs make bad installs.

Torrents add extra error checking but is not infallible.

I verified the MD5 checksum. It matched.

ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso
No defects were found on CD.

Brilliant, remember to MD5 test the ISO *BEFORE* burning so you know the data is good. All I can suggest then is:

1. Make sure you have the latest BIOS (risky)
2. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

I downloaded the latest BIOS and reflashed my system.
It did not solve the problem.

May be a dumb question, but is there a way I can boot into the command line with networking and download display drivers?

Sure, you can download the .run file from www.nvidia.com and install it in command line (boot to root recovery mode to install it)

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Anand Reddy for more information if necessary.
