I installed Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday. I was wondering if I can uninstall Windows XP. I dont see the uninstall choice in the Windows control panel. Also any advice on GRUB as Im seeing updates already.

Asked by David Jakstys

I downloaded 10.04 and I have a choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04. I only have 37gb of memory and am wondering how to un-install Windows XP. Went to the Windows control panel and the uninstall choice is not there. I have about 10 GB of memory left. Should I just increase my memory? I have a Dell 8200 with a P4. I am so impressed with Ubuntu 10.04.

Also, What can I do to facilitate updating the so called Grub-pc file? Updates came automatically I think and Ubuntu worked very hard to resolve the grub-pc issue but what only able to do a partial software update.

The two show up as separate operating systems.  When I begin I am given a choice of Windows or Ubuntu.  Ubuntu was installed on the C drive when I did the download.

Fakhrul, I want to know if I can Uninstall Windows xp.  I don't see the option in the Windows Control Panel.  Also there was some difficulty installing a GRUB file when Ubuntu was updating.

Tell us that Ubuntu and Windows are separate choices doesn't help so much.
Please tell do you have installed Ubuntu entirely booting your pc from a Live Ubuntu install cd without starting Windows ( the usual installation ) or you have installed Ubuntu using Windows ( this installation is the Wubi installation ).

Thank you

Since you are so new to Ubuntu I would suggest you keep windows for a while, how ever you can download and burn a ISO and put in your CD drive then reboot it will erase windows permantly and install which ever distro of Ubuntu you have downloaded. If you decide to completely install Ubuntu from a burned CD be sure to MD5SUM check the disk before attempting to install it.

I have the same problem but more complex. I decided to try Linux. I downloaded with Wubi. When I boot up I have a choice first of XP or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu then another menu pops up with several choices of Ubuntu...'generic' and something else...I think a safe mode. I choose the generic. Have no problems...just getting used to the system. But here's the problem with XP...

1. I need to uninstall because I have a LogiTech program running on it that is acting like a virus. I cannot install any programs...the LogiTech Setpoint keeps reinstalling. Wasted a lot of time trying to uninstall...no more.
2. This computer was given to me without any hardware (yes, it is legit software, my relative just gave me no CDs...threw them away when he got his new computer...DUH. I did manage to get the product key using another program).
3. I cannot get the computer to boot from the cd from anywhere so I can use the live Ubuntu cd I burned so I can wipe out XP.
4. Boot menu has 2 choices: Hardrive and IDE CD-ROM. Tried changing. No good.

How to get rid of XP? Can I go into the computer and just delete it? It does not appear on Add/Remove. BTW I am getting an external drive and plan to run XP from there for some few programs that (so far) I cannot run on Linux, so I'm not worried about keeping XP because I'm new to Ubuntu.

Just want to remove XP since it's almost useless anyway because I cannot install updates, ANYTHING. Thanks

Hi Michelle, I had the same dilemna exactly.  Ubuntu 10.04 is wonderful.  I found an article on the internet on how to burn an ISO cd to install Linux and to completely erase Windows XP.  You are so right, there is no uninstall of Windows.  I worked with Microsoft and Security Essentials software to get rid of the viruses that were really bothering me.  Then I made the switch to 10.04 with a Live CD I made from documentation.  I did do some fiddling with certain parameters in XP.  I could probably get you more information if you need it.  I dont know if this will work for you because of this LogiTech Setpoint issue.  The Microsoft technical support people installed for free Microsoft Security Essentials and then twice removed viruses before I made the switch to get rid of XP and go with 10.04.  Let me know if you want more detail on my own process.

Michelle, what I was trying to explain is I had to get rid of the virus problem first and then I could install Ubuntu.  Maybe you need a pro and maybe that disk needs to be formatted to start from scratch.  Good Luck
