Freezes while installation 10.04 on Intel 965 motherboards

Asked by Oliver Gindlhumer

Ok i decided to open a new ticket since i think it is a different problem, than the previous one.
Here is my story:
I am running a PC with XP installed and i want to install ubuntu 10.04 onto my second hdd.
my specs are as follows: http://v1ech.wippiespace.com/zeug/pcspecs.jpg

The first thing i ve tried was the windows installer, which worked normal until i rebooted to complete the installation.
After reboot i could choose ubuntu from the bootlist and it started loading the installer but keeps freezing out after like half a minute.
The next thing i have tried was downloading the normal desktop edition, pack the image onto my usb drive using the tool recommended on ubuntu.com.
i rebooted and booted from the usb drive which started the installation, the first steps like choosing language, timezone, etc went well but after the 3rd or 4th step it kept freezing out again.
After some help with your really nice ticketsystem i decided to try the textinstaller, burned it on a cd and rebooted.
again the startscreen of the ubuntuinstaller popped up and the first steps went well, right until the step of seeking hdds (i think it is the step right after choosing my pc name).
I think there is the problem. Always when the installer wants to check for the available drives, some problem appears and if freezes.
I doubt that my processor, my graphicscard or anything else is the problem, since i can always perfectly go through the first steps.

Well the installer never told me that its checking for the drives in my system but i suppose it has to be that step, since it would kinda make sense and i had a look onto the step list of the textinstaller.

Additionally i have to say that i have md5checked every file i downloaded, and i ve done a memorytest once without any errors.

I hope we can finally get this done :)
Thanks in advance!

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn it as slowly as you could?
Did you check your RAM?

that link seems really helpful and in the part Installer "Freezes on Not Finding IDE CD/DVD-ROM Drive"
it really does name my Motherboard (DG965WH) as affected.
But actually i somehow dont understand what that all is about and if that really is my problem (also got some problems with all the technical talking since i m neither native english speaking, nor do i have the hardware knowledge).

Could somebody of you professionals help me out finding a method to fix the problem please?
Do i maybe have to change something on my drives?

Well if it helps: i got a Intel core2 Quad Q6600, on a DG965WH Mainboard.

Many,many thanks in advance!

I've experienced the same issue with Foxconn 965P motherboard since Ubuntu 8.04, seems like the bug is still present. However, don't attempt to install other distribution because I've tested many of them and they all freeze. So, the only remaining option is to update (Flash) your BIOS, but be aware because it can be dangerous.

did the bios update solve the problem for you?

are there any disadvantages of a flashed bios?
i already found a walkthrough in 10 steps to flash my bios without any danger.

@tom: Thanks. i m gonna keep on posting in the german section if the problems still persist but i m now gonna try the bios update method and if it works i m gonna post the solution in here again.

Actually I'm not using that computer now and I did not flash the BIOS. As I said Please be CAREFUL with BIOS updating, or at least ask a friend or professional administrator who already did that before.

I successfully updated my BIOS which was really easy and uncomplicated on a Intel motherboard.
Intel provides an express installer AllinOne tool, which seems to prevent the worst case pretty well.
I actually had 2 attempts to do this, the first time flashing it was not successful but it didnt have any consequences at all.

On the second try everything went perfect, and the installer went as it had to.
Many thanks to all of you for the help.

Oliver does your system works fine now? Please confirm so that we can propose this as workaround for future issues with Intel 965 motherboards. Thanks in advance!

Everything is working perfectly now Pako!
I can confirm the BIOS update is a workaround for the Intel 965 motherboards although as you already named it before, it is a dangerous method.
