How can I input Chinese in Ubuntu 7.04? Thanks

Asked by donot

I installed the Chinese language support. I can run the SCIM setup from preference. I typed "SCIM" in a terminal. The followings are all I got:

Smart Common Input Method 1.4.4

Launching a SCIM daemon with Socket FrontEnd...
Loading simple Config module ...
Creating backend ...
Loading socket FrontEnd module ...
Starting SCIM as daemon ...
Launching a SCIM process with x11...
Loading socket Config module ...
Creating backend ...
Loading x11 FrontEnd module ...
GTK Panel of SCIM 1.4.4

Starting SCIM ...

Nothing happens after that. Can anyone tell me how to input Chinese or where to find the Howto?

Thanks!

Im not a chinese speeker myself but this seems to be the best guide for using/setting up SCIM
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM

of note:
"""
Using SCIM

SCIM should now start along with every application. To trigger it, use any of these shortcut keys : Control+space, Shift+space, Zenkaku_Hankaku(on Japanese keyboard), Hangul(on Korean keyboard)

While inputting, if you want to switch back and forth between your CJK language and your session language, you can just use the shortcut key. Fast and easy!

Note: If you find that the shortcut key has stopped working, check your Caps Lock status. The shortcut key for SCIM will not work if Caps Lock is turned on (this is arguably a bug).

Same question I encountered!
I solved it with the help of Ming Hua from here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/scim/+bug/106087

Let me quote his words as following:

Hi matthias,

Please test the following:
1. Disable scim. The best way is probably run 'im-switch -s none', then logout and login again. You can also just use Alt-F1 to switch to terminal before XFCE login and do step 2 if you are familiar with that.
2. Make sure scim isn't started. Edit your ~/.scim/config file, change the '/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic' setting to 'true'.
3. Renable scim, by running 'im-switch -s scim_xim'. Logout and login again. Now scim should be automatically started as before.

See if it helps.

BTW, if you prefer to read Chinese, I just translate it of this post:

Good luck!
