DId you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD slowly?
Have you tested your RAM?

i ran a test on all three copies i downloaded they all failed even the
torrent so i sent away for an official copy.when i tried to install that i
got the same error message "The Installer encountered an unrecoverable
error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the
problem. Or try installing again.. i tried to go for just a desktop session
without install and installing from there. this gets over the error message
but a crash report appears.when you finally get it installed it will not
auto mount cds pen drives external hard drives etc, the boot up times are a
lot slower than karmic it takes longer to load programs as i said it is a
mess the worst ubuntu i have tried to use i will stick with karmic till i
know it is fixed

Thats why you are getting issues. Please check BEFORE burning. A bad image will make a bad installation experience.

You could try the minimal ISO and install via the web (min.iso will be ~12Mb :))

as i said i have a copy of the live cd supplied by canonical which i
thought would be ok . but i still get the install error the crash report
when i use the workaround. and no auto mount. when installed it is still
slower than karmic on boot up and programs take longer to load

Could you post the error messages ?
And when did you get exactly this error ?

Can you help with this problem?
