Hi :)

I am not quite sure what you are new to and what you are trying to do. I have been using Ubuntu for about 3 years and still have no idea about cron jobs.

To keep my data safer i put my /home folder on it's own partition so that i could reinstall the whole OS without touching any of my data or settings.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving

Since the /home folder contains ALL the data&settings for all the machine's users it is also easy to use that guide to help back-up data if i do try doing anything risky.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
