I understand you are using the LiveCD: you can't install additional programs with the LiveCD.
Telling us also the error message (not just that you get one) would also give us some clues.

I have exactly the same problem as Hawkman. I'm using Linux Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn) and Mozila Firefox 2.0.0.6. Any of the several Sun JRE options for Linux you download gives the same message. Example... downloaded to the desktop file "jre-6-linux-i586.bin" (18.09 MB). When double-clicked to open the message reads:
Could not open the file /home/bernie/Desktop/jre-6-linux-i586.bin.
gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character coding from the menu and try again.

Tried... UTF-8
Could not open the file /home/bernie/Desktop/jre-6-linux-i586.bin using the Unicode (UTF-8) character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a different character coding from the menu and try again.

Tried Western (ISO-8859-15)
Could not open the file /home/bernie/Desktop/jre-6-linux-i586.bin using the Western (ISO-8859-15) character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a different character coding from the menu and try again.

Obviously, a binary file cannot be opened by just double-clicking the downloaded file icon. What should we do then?

I'm just posting what I did in Ubuntu 7.04 to 'activate' Java JRE . As Bhavani suggested, Java is included in the Ubuntu repositories. It's only a matter of finding where it is and activating it. Java for Firefox is sun-java6-plugin. Go to SYSTEM>ADMINITRATION>SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER and search keyword "java". From the list look for the "sun-java6-plugin". Right-click and select "mark for installation". Click "apply" and voila!. Again, thanks Bhavani for the push!
