Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

wubi.exe failed in Win7 whether downloaded as a single file or as part of
the iso.

I have just compared the checksum on the iso, and it succeeded.

Apparently I (mistakenly) thought I could install Ubuntu without making a
separate partition for it. I want linux (preferably Ubuntu) alongside
Windows7 without having to reboot to use it. Now I believe this is
impossible (in contrast to cygwin).

Today I'll anyway install Ubuntu in a proper partition (using a CD burnt
with the iso) and expect it to work.

We can now close this issue.

The MD5sum check is very useful. Please remember to MD5 test BEFORE using data you have downloaded as a bad download will give a bad install.

Even if you use wubi, you will need to reboot to change the OS. If you want that sort of functionality then I suggest virtualbox or vmware.

Can you help with this problem?
