10.04 edition, desktop or netbook to choose

Asked by Tasos Sarris

I am a bit confused, about which version of Ubuntu 10.04 to install (netbook or desktop ), since my portable machine has the following features:

Toshiba T110-10N , CPU SU2700, 11.6" screen, 4 GB Ram, 1GB dedicated VRAM, 320 GB H.D, + wireless+ bluetooth+webcam.
Finally there is a small screen, no SSD, no oprical drive. So I think I am between Netbook and Laptop.
Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Thanks Tasos

I think it is better to get netbook ,because it is tweaked for laptops ( screen resolution other things).

Since I have not tried out this new edition, I would like to know which one edition -if there is such an option- would give me the opportunity to be transfered to the other one , without installing the 10.04 from the begining again. Is there such an option?

Hi, I'm in the same position. I've got the same computer and I'm wondering which Ubuntu to install. I prefer the desktop version layout, etc, but the Toshiba T110 has got a Celeron processor. Does any one know if it will work better on the Netbook version, (which I understand is optimised for Atom processors) or will it run the same as the desktop version?

Hi,

I think it depends on the screen resolution of your netbook/laptop. The netbook version of Ubuntu is designed for netbooks which typically have a small screen (usually 9-10") and a resolution of 1024x600 (different from the 1024x768 that ultraportable laptops may have). In the latter case, you might have a better work experience with the regular Ubuntu desktop as some applications have not been designed for the smaller netbook screen resolution (=> some apps have their buttons out of the screen range).

Anyway, always try the live CD or a live USB on your computer first to verify that evrything is OK from graphics to the network, especially the wifi connection, before installing.

If you already have 9.10, you can upgrade directly to 10.04 LTS and you will keep installed applications. But sometimes upgrading can cause some problems that a fresh install won't cause (and vice versa also).

You don't need to worry about performance using either version, Ubuntu desktop will run absolutely fine on those specifications. The answer is really which one you prefer the appearance of, the choice is entirely yours. As for screen resolution, I've just checked, and you have 1024*768, and so Ubuntu desktop would probably look a little better, but ultimately it shouldn't make much difference. Hope that helps!

Well, I installed the desktop edtion a few days ago, now I am checking the working state (e.g. speed, funtionality), I have the same impression like you. I think, the desktop edition meets better my needs.
I just need to know from you, if you face any difficulties with the wireless. Mein seems, not to work its wireless. I did not check it, using the netbook edition

Hi :)

If the wireless is still an issue you might find this other thread useful
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/109248
although i think that is for a very specific wiifi card, hopefully the same one that you are using? Something like this should help you find which card

sudo lshw | more

Also on any install of Ubuntu it is wise to work through the medibuntu page to sort all the multimedia issues out
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

As a general rule i would go for the Netbook remix for anything from a full sized laptop down to perhaps even hand-helds. This should sort the drivers for you. On a decently sized screen it might be worth adding the normal Ubuntu desktop with this command

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

in your particular case it has obviously worked out well already :)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
