No wireless connection in Toshiba T110

Asked by Dan Hamlin

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Toshiba T110 netbook. All works OK except wireless connection. The connection data is all input OK and the connection shows up and asks for a password, but after putting in the wireless key, the dialogue box comes up again asking for the same information. Occasionally, I do connect, but can't get any internet. Currently working on a wired connection.

Any help gratefully received.

Thankfully, there is a very simple solution to this. I have exactly the same wifi card (Realtek RTL8192se) and this worked perfectly for me - the particular card is known for being difficult. The following set of commands should get it up and working for you. Basically, it's just adding a driver from Realtek that wasn't included with the latest Ubuntu release but has been packaged by a member of the community.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:matt-price/mattprice

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install rtl8192se-dkms

Each step will ask you for your password, and just follow through the install script answering yes if/where necessary during the DKMS install. Should be entirely self explanatory. After this, REBOOT, and then with a but of luck everything should work perfectly as it does for me. Let us know what happens.

Thanks!

By the way, this assumes you're using either K/X/Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04.

This fix is still available for older versions, just a little more fiddly.

And you are, so no problems. Sorry about that!

Many thanks for this Connor, halfway there now.

I've installed the driver and now connect to the wireless hub, but can't get
an internet connection.

In my hub settings to get the connection I've disabled IPV6 and my IPV4
settings are shared with other computers. I've ticked the 'no proxy' setting
in Firefox, but still no internet.

Not sure what to do next.

If it's connecting and staying solidly connected to the hub, then logically this must be an issue with the hub itself. According to the linked bug, there are I'm afraid this isn't an area of expertise for me at all. Does the Network Manager logo in the system tray look completely normal?

Connor,

Just tried a couple of re-starts and changed the proxy settings in Firefox. This seems to have worked and i now have wireless access at last. No looking back to windows!

Many thanks for your help and guidance.
