Ubuntu10.4 AMD64 installed with gnome+kde desktops. in gnome usb wireless works but in kde it does not accept ppp settings

Asked by 1aussie.ken

Hi, I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 with Gnome first and have my Optus E620/E169 USB Wireless modem working well under Gnome. Also installed is the KDE4 desktop. Under KDE the USB icon does not appear on the desktop as in Gnome. The KPPP has been installed along with many other KDE extras(200MB+). I have set the proxy settings/connect/basic No/ppp/chaps etc yet it still says I have network connection errors. I am baffled as to why this occurs. I thought that the settings would auto transfer even though the desktop is different. In the Gnome desktop I am able to use KDE settings/programmes and when in KDE I am able to choose Gnome. Is anyone able to shed some light on this topic please? Thanks in advance.

actionparsnip, thanks for responding. I have logged a bug but this does not answer my question. i am well aware that Lucid has bugs. but not so many as I thought it might have. so far it has performed very well for me.

That's why it's not released yet and is not ready. There will be lots of bugs AFTER release too as Ubuntu has a retarded and rigid release schedule rather than releasing it when its actually ready.

Hi

with an additional 304MB KDE updates I was able to get connected through the USB to the internet. Quite obviously additional packages need to be installed. I went to synaptic typed in kde at the top and picked out as many packages as i thought necessary. now i have switched into kde desktop and it worked straight away as it accepted the gnome settings i had. sorry i cfant be more specific. thanks for the help.

Just discovered that I needed to do a FIRMWARE and IP CONNECTION software update PRIOR to installing on 10.04 LTS. The IP (OPTUS) and Huawei(E169 USB) did not advise of updates. After doing both on an Microsoft brick I was able to get not only a better connection recognition but my internet speed has gone from 54kbs to 3mbs!! The way it has always meant to be at 3mbs. Initially I thought it was 10.04 LTS but its not. Sorry to inconvenience anyone. I hope this comment helps any other person with similar issues.
