It sounds like you are not connected to the Internet, or you don't have access to a domain name server. Can you browse the web?

ph.archive.ubuntu.com is clearly having issues. I suggest you use software sources under administration and select a different server.

Change your source as I recommended, the one you are trying to use is having trouble. There are lots of alternatives.

Can you explain further / teach me how to do it? I'm kinda new to this, and I'm not getting what you mean by source. I'm sorry, and thanks.

On the update manager, in the lower left corner is a button called 'settings'-- open that, and the first tab is labeled 'Ubuntu Software'. One of the options is "download from" .. select 'other server' and then choose one that is in your home country. Or press the button to "Select best server".

You can also get to that same preferences panel by going System -> Administration -> Software Sources

At least, that's my guess.

What's in /etc/resolv.conf file?

On your terminal:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

You can try editing it and changing the values inside the file with:

gksudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf

Remove all entries (nameserver) and replace it with the following line of texts below:

nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

Save the file and retry updating:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

my resolv.conf contains 192.168.0.1 as nameserver and I changed it to the one you said above (208.----222 and 208.----220), and I have these error messages. Thank you for your patience.

ok lets do this the hacky way:

gksudo gedit /etc/hosts

ad this line at the bottom of the file:

91.189.88.40 archive.ubuntu.com

Save the new file, close gedit then run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Should be ok.

Hi :)

Errr, this might be an obvious question but are you running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)? If not, if you have upgraded from Karmic or something then that explains what is going wrong ... but not how it got set-up wrong. This does happen sometimes when upgrading.

Please could you copy&paste into here the contents of your "sources.list"? Do we still have that in 10.04? I couldn't find mine! I thought it was in /etc ?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

This might not solve the immediate problem but Medibuntu has been fixed now. You might like to quickly work through the Medibuntu worksheet to get the multimedia issues sorted the way it should be

change all the instances of:

http://archive.ubuntu.com

to

http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com

then press CTRL+X
press Y
press ENTER

then run:

Hi :)

Are you using the Server Edition?

The Server Edition runs only from a command-line and there area few web-browsers based on the command-line. You could also add a gnome or other Desktop Environment or better still if the machine is not a server to several other machines then you might be able to upgrade to the Desktop Edition of Ubuntu 10.04 which you could try out now as a LiveCd before it's officially released just to test it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
Perhaps even install it as a dual-boot?

Good luck and regards from

Hi :)

I would recommend trying the new release as a LiveCd before trying to upgrade to it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Then perhaps install it as a dual-boot just to check things work ok
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
I know this is for dual-booting with Windows but it's very much the same to set-up a dual/multi-boot with another version of Ubuntu.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
