audio video programs will not open after recent update

Asked by Jeremy Stults

After a recent update for Ubuntu I could not play any audio or video files. I tried to open the file with different programs such as VLC media player and kaffeine but they did not work along with the original movie player ubuntu comes with. Rhythmbox, Fspot viewer and a few other programs do not open at all. The files are not corrupted or damaged in any way, I have sent them to my windows OS and they work fine. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeremy!
Did you install package "ubuntu-restricted-extras" from repositories?
And I dont understand why you mentioned F-Spot, it`s a program to manage photos :)

Hi :)

During boot-up do you get the grub menu offering lots of choices for booting into Ubuntu? The 2nd option should have "Recovery mode" near the end of it's line. This should get you to a disturbingly blue screen but witha helpful menu. Try "Clear some space" and then "Fix broken packages" and finally "Resume normal boot". Hopefully now it should all work again?

Whenever you upgrade or install a new version of Ubuntu it is wise to work through the medibuntu worksheet to make sure you have multimedia issues all sorted in 1 go
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
Part of that includes getting the restricted extras but the medibuntu page brings it all together in one single page guide

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Did you get any error messages stopping the clear space or the "Fix broken packages" or did that go smoothly?

The next step is to work through the Medibuntu worksheet

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
