Hold down shift on start-up as soon as your BIOS messages disappear.
Now choose the second entry in the grub menu, it should include "recovery" in the name.
After the boot a menu will be shown, choose the option to go to the root shell.
At the command prompt enter: "passwd user_name" (where user_name is the name of your user)

I suggest you simply log in as your USER and run:

sudo usermod -p '!' roo

This will disable the root account as it is supposedto be in Ubuntu. You NEVER need to log on as root, nor should the account be enabled as it is a huge security flaw to have it enabled.

Stick to sudo / gksu / kdesu and your system will be a whole lot more secure. The users in the admin group (like the first account you made) have 100% of the power of root.

If that happnes, boot to recovery root console and reset the password. You do NOT enable the root account. If you screw that account up too you are really in trouble.

I recommend you boot to the liveCD then chroot to the installed system. You can then reset your USERS password and boot to your desktop to the DISABLE ROOT.

Stay off root. Every single piece of documentation will tell you to stay away from root yet you have chosen to ignore this and got yourself into a whole heap of trouble.
