taken from the ubottu bot message on #ubuntu:

Do not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

NO Aneesh,
There is no Root password at the best you can login into root desktop if that is what you want then....boot into recovery mode then select the last option ie drop to root shell after that type startx when you see
root@aneesh-desktop# startx
presuming that aneesh is coming it will be coming by system you are not involved in this) now you are in root desktop

There is no way to view the password created by any user, including root. If someone else created the password, you can look for a password cracker program and hope or you can ask the person if you took over the computer.... or you would have to reformat and start over, building your own system.
Being able to see what another person's password is would be a weak security system.

By default, the root user account is disabled in Ubuntu for various reasons. however, you can enable the account if you really need it. if this is true in your case, and if you already login with root account, or in the root shell prompt in the recovery mode, you can change your root password if you forgot it.
give command
passwd root

and give the new password.
